So, I’m 20F and currently living with my parents during my college break. I just can’t wrap my head around why my family acts the way they do when I’m in my VR headset. My stepmom, who’s 46, tends to be super loud when I’m talking to someone in a game, and she often chimes in on conversations that don’t really need her input. It’s honestly a bit annoying, but I guess I can deal with it by muting myself. What really gets to me though is how often she and my aunt, who’s 44, comment on how stupid I look while playing. Like, duh, I know I look goofy, but it feels like they just don’t respect my enjoyment of gaming. Plus, they keep saying I’m going to get brain or eye cancer from using my Oculus Quest 2. I’ve had it for a while now, and their constant warnings just feel bizarre. The worst part was when I opened up to my stepmom about some visions I’ve been having, thinking I might have schizophrenia, and she just blamed it on the VR. I mean, I’ve been using the headset for a long time, and these visions only started recently. It’s all so confusing and honestly makes me feel bad about doing something I really enjoy. Am I overreacting here?
I totally get where you’re coming from. My family does similar stuff when I’m gaming. It’s like they don’t understand it’s just a game.
The cancer comments are wild. I mean, we’ve been using these devices for years and it’s not like everyone gets sick from them.
Opening up about your visions is tough. I hope your family can be more supportive. Have you thought about talking to a professional about that?
It sounds like they might be worried about you in their own weird way. Maybe they just don’t know how to express it properly?
