I keep up with all stuff that isn’t simply Gen AI and has been around for a while. For VR, AR, Metaverse, spatial, etc., there are multiple overlapping classifications, but no one, unified word has been coined.
One of the main reasons that Gen AI is so hyped up is because of its short, memorable moniker. It is not necessary or relevant for the general public to be aware of all that goes into “AI.” All they have to do is mention “new in AI,” that’s all.
Which kind of reality is it—immersive, mixed, or extended? Something else?
It could be considered “Extended Reality” (XR). This is a broad term encompassing Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR).
XR is an umbrella term covering all immersive technologies, from fully virtual environments to those that blend digital content with the real world.
While XR has been around for some time, it hasn’t caught on as a widely recognized buzzword like “Gen AI.” The complexity and diversity of the technologies it encompasses might be one reason why it hasn’t achieved the same level of hype or recognition.
Thus, a unifying term with the same punch as “AI,” “XR” is probably the closest existing candidate. However, it might need a more mainstream, catchy name to gain traction with the general public.
In my journey through tech, I’ve seen various terms like VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality), and MR (Mixed Reality) evolve and overlap, but finding a unified term that encapsulates them all has been elusive. Given how Gen AI has captivated the public with its concise and impactful name, the overarching category you’re looking for might be “Extended Reality” (XR). XR is an inclusive term that covers VR, AR, and MR, encompassing all forms of immersive and interactive environments. It’s the broadest term that captures the essence of these technologies while being user-friendly and memorable for the general public.
For emerging tech like VR, AR, and the Metaverse, “extended reality” (XR) serves as a unified term encompassing all these overlapping classifications. It captures the essence of immersive, mixed, and other blended experiences. The simplicity and inclusiveness of XR make it a practical term for the general public.
