Virtual Desktop + Quest 3 + RTX 3080 Settings... Any tips?

I have been tinkering with my VD settings for the last couple of days. I’ve seen a bunch of posts about settings, but not much on the combination of RTX 3080 with Quest 3. My setup is PC Ethernet-cabled to a router, which is WIFI6 and only 2-3 meters away from my play area. I have an RTX 3080, a Ryzen 3900x, and a Quest 3. I’ve mostly tested with Half Life Alyx and Metro Awakening. I’m happy with my balance of Render Quality and Latency, but I want to see if there’s anything I can improve. Here are my current settings: HEVC 10-bit 90 hz, Bitrate: 120 Mbps, VDXR Render Quality: Ultra. I don’t use Snapdragon Super Resolution, SSW, or automatic Bitrate. With these settings, I get between 35-50ms. I can’t seem to get below 30ms without impacting image quality. I’ve tried lower render quality with higher Bitrate, but it didn’t help latency. I’m locked on 90 hz and don’t want to go lower. I tried 120hz, but it didn’t improve things. Most latency comes from encoding. I also tried h264+ with 500 Mbps, but networking latency went over 60ms. Up to 50ms, I don’t get micro stutters, which feels good. If I bump the Bitrate to 150 Mbps, it crosses 50ms regularly without better image quality. Any suggestions to improve my experience? Metro Awakening looked great, and I’d love to see amazing quality with decent Bitrate and maybe AV1, but I’ll have to wait for a 5000 series card. Any feedback is appreciated.

Good post! I use similar settings myself.

Have you tried the AV1 codec? I’ve heard good things.

The 3080 doesn’t support AV1, unfortunately.

I’m running a similar setup and found that adjusting the encoding settings helped a bit. Have you experimented with that?

I tried some adjustments but found they didn’t really improve latency. I’m curious what specific settings worked for you.

What about trying a wired connection directly to your Quest? It might help with latency.

That sounds interesting. I might give that a shot!

Consider optimizing your router settings. Sometimes tweaking QoS can make a difference.

Yeah, I heard that helps with prioritizing VR traffic. Worth a try.
