Used RTX 2080 Super for $150 vs New RTX 3060 12GB for $299 for PCVR gaming?

I’m trying to build a replacement rig since my gaming laptop died, but I don’t have the funds to go with a high-end graphics card. I was looking at purchasing an RTX 3060 12GB from Amazon for $299.99. My coworker is willing to sell me his RTX 2080 Super for $150. I trust that he’s kept it in good order, so I’m not worried about wear and tear, but I’m concerned about performance. I enjoyed playing PCVR on my Zephyrus M15 and want something comparable or better. Any suggestions?

Ah, tough one. The 2080 has more horsepower, but the 3060 has more VRAM. I think I’d lean towards the 2080 for the horsepower.

Maybe look for a used 3080 for around $300. I’m afraid the 3060 will be too weak for VR. You can use it, but most likely with low graphic settings.

I’m using a 3070 and it feels too weak for anything more complicated than Beat Saber. Definitely aim higher.

I have owned the 2080 Super, and it does VR pretty well, better than the 3060.

Buy the 2080 Super and save up for at least something in the 40 series. I have the 2080 Gaming Trio and have been using it for VR for the last 3 years. It’s a good card, and I think the Super is a bit more powerful.

From looking around, any card that is comparable to the RTX 2080 is roughly $300 brand new. So, getting that performance for half the price is a good value. I would pick the 2080 Super for $150 and save for an upgrade if needed.

It will run better than that for sure. If you are fine with the 2070 Super laptop version, the 2080 Super for $150 is a great deal.

I’ve tried both a 3060 and a 6750 XT, and both sucked for PCVR. I’d try to get a used 3080 or better if I were you.

I’d say neither of those would give a fully enjoyable experience. I believe a 4070 is the bottom to enjoy VR games.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! Considering the offer from my coworker, this feels like an opportunity for a new build rather than just finding a quick replacement for my laptop.
