Hey Folks, I’m working on a project for my university and could use some help to understand AR headsets and their capabilities. There are just so many options out there that I’m a bit lost. Ideally, I need an AR headset that works with Unity, allowing the wearer to interact with virtual things without needing controllers. My lab has some cool 3D cameras from StereoLabs that detect space, people, and motion, so maybe I just need AR gear that focuses on visuals. I know about VRs like the Quest 3 and their XR features, but they’re bulky and come with controllers. We also have an Apple Vision Pro, but it’s in use elsewhere, so I thought I’d ask if other AR options might fit what I’m looking for.
Sounds like a cool project! Have you checked out the Microsoft HoloLens? It’s pretty good for AR and works with Unity.
I’ve heard about HoloLens! Does it let you interact without controllers?
Yeah, it can do gesture tracking so you can interact with virtual stuff directly!
What about the Magic Leap? I think it has some cool features for AR and also works with Unity.
I’ve seen some Magic Leap demos! Does it have good spatial awareness?
Yep, it’s designed for that! It can map the environment pretty well.
Have you thought about using ARKit with an iPad? It could be a cheaper option if you want to test some ideas.
I haven’t, but that sounds interesting! Can you interact with things like you would in AR?
Totally! Just use your hands or even touch the screen to interact with virtual objects.
IDK if they fit your needs, but have you looked into the Nreal Light glasses? They’re lightweight and might work for your project.
I’ve seen those! Do they have good integration with Unity?
Yeah, they support Unity, but you might need to check if they fit with your 3D cameras.
What about the VIVE Flow? It’s portable and has some AR features that could be useful.
I’ve heard of VIVE Flow! Can it pass through visuals like you mentioned?
Yes, it has some passthrough capabilities, but it’s more VR-focused. Might need to look into it more.
