Marques Brownlee: Tests Meta and Snapchat Augmented Reality Glasses

Man, I am excited about the future of augmented reality glasses. I bet that in 5-10 years, we will be using them the same way we use our cellphones and computers.

Yes. We’re at an interesting point where we can use mixed reality in a larger form at home and soon for work. In a few years, we might wear glasses connected to multimodal AI that have displays. As you said, 5-10 years from now, we’ll see more powerful glasses capable of all-day mixed reality applications.

We continue to merge with our technology as it becomes exponentially smarter.

I’d take that bet! It took 17 years to get here with phones if we take the iPhone as a start. Google Glass was 11 years ago, and look at where we are. I’m excited too, but maybe in 5 years we’ll have the tech for consumers—still a long way to build the ecosystem.

The difference is we now have better tools to build on. Mobile apps and 3D developers are everywhere.

Not sure about that difference. The iPhone didn’t just appear out of thin air; mobile phones, internet, and laptops were already popular.

But glasses are more of a phone accessory. Many apps will run on phones with a new UI.

I agree. All the timelines I see are off. I’d say 10-15 years before consumer-ready glasses, maybe 30 years before they look like what we imagine. Battery life is a big barrier unless we get a major breakthrough.

Is snatching really a big problem where you live? I’ve never seen a snatch theft outside movies.

If snatching was an issue, they could add a chain like old people’s reading glasses.

People use $1.5k phones while walking, and they’re not facing massive theft issues. Phones still sell well.

I’d rather avoid bulky tech. Low-tech ones like Even Realities G1 are actual lifestyle accessories. Hoping Google and Samsung bring something more wearable.

#AREAILISM is coming! Integrating AR and AI is going to be amazing. Exciting times ahead! :)))
