I have built a self-contained pair of AR goggles running full web apps. Vid in comments

I respect this effort, however in order to properly see it I think much better “through-the-lense” footage is needed!

That’s an amazing feat!

What field of view did you achieve, and is the tech similar to waveguides or to birdbath, or is it something different from the ground up?

Thank you. It’s a homemade system. Waveguides, or even just a birdbath would not be viable to build at home. By utilizing the space to the side of the eyes, I was able to fit in a LCD projector I made, collimating the light through a resin lens. This light just bounces off the 45° combiner and appears at infinite distance, so you can focus it easily.

Edit: The FoV is around 37° horizontally. Already working on V2 with almost 50°

Hey, I am 17 years old teen who is 5 years from age 12 was interested in ar glasses. From magic leap that I had to oculus rift and quest 2,3 up to snap spectacles and HoloLens . It always geeked me out . I tried to build some cool things like arudino nano which uses small OLED display to mirror the screen to small optic . It was cool but bulky. And I just wanted to say that what you did here. It’s more than amazing . It’s my childhood dream. You can’t believe how much I think that you are so amazing talented man and I appreciate this wonderful thing. I hope you will publish soon some open source files because It will be dream come true for me to build
Those. I really like the os which look more like spatial version like Orion rather than some xreal flat ui. Hope I can somehow help with this project by software or hardware . Dm me if I can help somehow

Thank you very much for such a beautiful response. I’m so happy Zero is inspiring people in the DIY community. If you got Twitter, there’s more frequent updates there. The best support you can give is sharing and interacting with any posts about Zero. I will also put a more technical post on the Raspberry PI sub later. You can also comment on the article XDA wrote about my device to show them there’s interest in covering Zero.

Stay curious and never stop making!

Thank you , I will surely do that. Any estimated time for open source files or buyable product?

Once I get to build the V2.0 version, I will opensource all the software and hardware files to make Zero 1.5 at home. Now I’m only budget-restricted, but will probably make a patreon to build the new device with the community

Sounds amazing .hope to hear new stuff soon. Have a great day

Incredibly exciting I feel like as tech like this progresses I get more excited for it because I don’t have to imagine everything I look at in every turn of my neck being transmitted to an profiling/ advertising company.

The same way that local llms completely change the use case for ai, having open source AR display like this would completely change how comfortable I felt using anything like that because well you have that piece of mind knowing it’s only doing what you’re telling it to.

Never gona give you up!

This is the level of nerd I aspire to be someday.

If he open sources it, yes

If he open sources it, yes

Sick build. Theoretically, could this be 6dof?

Yes. I’m making 2.0 right now which also includes a camera for any tracking

well they certainly look badass

Want to do a startup together? I’ve got some money.

This is amazing! Any tips on making the lenses you’re willing to share?

Lenses were the worst part. Calculate what lens you need to achieve a “virtual image”, then 3D print molds and pour resin. Then sanding for days haha
