Could the MX Ink Stylus + Meta Quest Be a Portable Alternative to a Wacom Cintiq?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking about an idea and wanted to share it to see what the community thinks. With the Meta Quest 3 and MX Ink - MR Stylus, it seems like there’s potential to create a virtual alternative to a Wacom Cintiq. Imagine being able to:

  • Mirror your PC screen in VR (something like Virtual Desktop or Immersed VR).
  • Use the MX Ink stylus for precise drawing input on the mirrored PC screen, just like a pen tablet or display tablet.

This setup could offer a more affordable and portable solution compared to a traditional Cintiq. For example:

  • Quest 3 ($500) + MX Ink ($100) + multiple monitors = ~$600.
  • Wacom Cintiq 16 costs ~$800+, and it’s not portable.

I’ve searched around but haven’t found any existing tools or frameworks designed for this use case. Most apps seem to focus on general screen mirroring or VR-native art tools, not using VR as a true drawing tablet for PC software like Photoshop or ZBrush.

So, I’m throwing this idea out there to see if anyone else finds it interesting. Could this be the next step for creative tools? I’d love to hear your thoughts, whether you’re a developer, artist, or just curious about the possibilities. Maybe we can get this idea on the radar for future development.

I think it would be an imperfect replacement. The Q3 screen isn’t particularly color accurate for pro work, and the stylus may not be as precise as a professional art tablet. VR headsets have advantages for 3D art, but for 2D art, a traditional setup might be better. For portability, consider a high-end iPad with a stylus.
