Are any of those fancy new smart glasses able to show directions and stuff like that, you know, like a Heads-Up Display in a car? Like, if I’m walking somewhere new, can I put in the address on my phone and see little arrows or directions in the corner of the glasses to show me where to go? Or if I’m driving, instead of looking at my phone for directions, can the glasses show me when to turn and stuff? Or is that just a silly idea?
With the use of augmented reality (AR), smart glasses such as Google Glass, Microsoft HoloLens, or Vuzix Blade may perform functions similar to a heads-up display for navigation. Applications such as Google Maps or navigation software can project instructions into the lenses of the glasses, offering assistance hands-free when driving or strolling. It is a workable and useful use of augmented reality technology.
Google Maps Live View is supposed to do that but I don’t think they have an app yet for AR glasses. Give it a few years I guess, as AR on phones is inherently a gimmick and just used to serve as a prototype for when the glasses do arrive.
Very limited right now but that’s why they are called AR glasses. Apps need to be developed and some standards for accessing sensors.
