What other uses could AR have beyond just car windshields?

I’m curious about the possibilities for AR outside of the typical car windshield applications. What do you all think?

Maybe displaying directions around a city? It could even be interactive, like a touchscreen, where you search for something and then highlight the area you want on the display.

But is this actually AR?

This feels more like a reflection display, kind of like the old ‘Pepper’s ghost’ effect. Similar to how WWII planes used reflector sights. Here’s an example of what I mean: Reflector sight

There’s a difference here though. One is display tech, the other is AR capability. Birdbath optics themselves aren’t AR; they just help with displaying. But with tracking tech, like 6DoF, they can enable AR uses.

Yep, I get what you’re saying. I could imagine adding eye tracking to match info with your viewpoint for real AR interaction.

I think the Prius has had a display like this for years now.

AR glasses are a good fit for this too.
Remote assistance for engineers – tech support could highlight circuits or valves that need work.
Maintenance staff could see markers for valves and pipes.
Maybe even for air or spacecraft maintenance.
Could be fun for entertainment too, like virtual tours through a safari.
Depends on the tech limits though.

Network techs could identify ‘hot’ wires in chaotic server rooms.

How about a dating app where people with the app get highlighted around you?

Oh wow, not sure about that… might be a bit much.

It could also be useful for site security and access management.

Imagine seeing the paths of aircraft, like an outline or beacon for flight paths.

Football coaches could use it to feed real-time data to QBs: play routes, incoming blitz signals, clocks, etc.

Could be game-changing for surgeries. Surgeons could have AR to guide them in real-time.

Does this let the text focus in the distance? I’d love a monitor where the display is set far out, so eyes can rest on it instead of close screens. It might even help prevent eye strain.

If this is for cars, it could show black ice warnings.
Or maybe IR vision for low visibility. Safety first, right?

Calling this AR is like saying Nintendo’s Virtual Boy was VR.

It could display thermal data too.

This seems more like a HUD than true AR.
