So I have this basic but genuine question about AR glasses. What can they actually do right now? I’m curious if any of them can support something like an AR video game. I mean, I’d love to play some fun games while using these glasses, but I’m not sure if the tech is there yet.
Honestly, not many can do that at the moment. Most of the options are pretty expensive too. The tech just isn’t quite there yet. A lot of developers are still sticking with big screen displays and notification glasses.
Ugh, I wanted to know if I could play Yu-Gi-Oh in AR lol. That would be so cool.
We are getting closer though. Check this out: https://youtube.com/shorts/6PgM6YvHxHs?si=Kr3fPJQ5un4Mtgub. Some cool stuff is happening.
It’s not really about the developers as much as the hardware. The field of view and resolution on true AR glasses just isn’t good enough for compelling games right now. Some prototypes look promising, but they aren’t available for consumers yet.
I’ve got a couple of pairs of Xreal glasses. They’re pretty cool but I feel like they focus more on hardware than software. I’ve seen a few games on Google Play, but they’re mostly super simple.
From what I’ve seen, there aren’t many affordable options that let you wear them every day and provide the kind of AR support a game needs. That said, I’m a game dev and I’m watching for new announcements to see if that changes.
