OpenAI CEO says they want to make AI hardware to replace smartphones... what could it be?

So, OpenAI is planning to develop AI hardware that could potentially replace smartphones. I mean, if it’s not AR glasses, what else could they be thinking of? They just filed a trademark for various devices like headphones, goggles, and smartwatches, which seems interesting. Plus, they hired some key people from Meta who worked on AR projects. And they’re teaming up with Jony Ive, which makes it sound like they’re serious about this hardware venture.

I heard they hired someone who worked on AR/VR projects at Oculus. It seems like they are building a strong team for this.

That’s true, I saw that too. It really makes you wonder what kind of device they’re planning.

Maybe they should just buy the Rabbit R1, since it’s already being called the best AI smartphone replacement out there.

I mean, that could be a solution. But it feels like they want to create something entirely new.

I think it’s probably not AR glasses. More likely, they will create a device similar to a smartphone but with an ASIC that can run large language models right in your pocket.

That could work, but how big would that market really be? I wouldn’t want another device in my pocket.

I get that, but if it has capabilities that make it unique, it might be worth it. Maybe something like a smart ring that connects to your phone could work too.

I wonder why anyone would take OpenAI seriously. I mean, is Altman really the right person for this?

That’s a fair point. But they seem to be making some big moves lately, so it could be interesting to see where this goes.
