So, Meta has officially discontinued the Quest Pro, which was their first mixed reality headset and also the most expensive one. Seems like they tried to beat Apple to the $1500 market but didn’t quite hit the mark. Anyone else feel like this was bound to happen? It’s wild how quickly the tech world changes, especially with the new headsets coming out.
They tried to beat Apple to the $1500 market, but what they didn’t realize is that people who buy tech products at that price are basically only buying Apple products. Then Apple responds with a $3000 headset and it turns out almost nobody is buying tech products at that price, not even Apple fans.
The Quest Pro is/was a great option for PCVR. It is head and shoulders above the Quest 2 and for me better than the 3 as well. It has a small but dedicated following of enthusiasts as it is. It hits the sweet spot of pancake lenses, great colors, and great wireless performance with WiFi 6e. It was never worth the price, especially compared to the Quest 3, but there is a lot to like.
Compete with Apple? You’re clearly confusing the timeline. By the time Quest Pro hit the market, nobody even knew Apple would make a VR device. There was no Apple competition.
I had a Quest Pro. It was supposed to be good for working in VR. It was buggy, the controllers were inconvenient, and the resolution was far too poor to code with.
