I’ve heard people say VR is the next big thing for sports, but it still feels like it’s not fully there yet. Are there any apps or platforms that actually let you watch live games in VR? What’s the experience like?
Let me know when we can watch F1 in VR. I’d even settle for 180-degree views.
Yeah, that would be awesome. Boxing or UFC in VR would be pretty cool too.
You can already watch ONE Championship replays in VR. It’s a start!
Imagine the resolution and bitrate you’d need for it not to look terrible… probably decades away.
If they attach cameras to the cars, I’d definitely check it out.
You can do something similar with racing sims. Save a replay and load it in VR. Some games even let you watch from the stands, like Automobilista 2.
I tried this once with a mooncar race. I spectated in VR and synced the stream audio. It was actually pretty fun to watch from the virtual stands.
The Apple Vision Pro has this amazing F1 setup where you see live data on a virtual tabletop track with driver positions highlighted. Looks incredible, but at $3k, it’s a tough sell. Still, I’d love to try it.
It’s crazy how headset makers haven’t pushed harder for this. Years ago, I showed people a VR sports-watching demo on my Quest, and it blew them away. It’s such an obvious use for VR, and it could be a huge reason for more people to adopt headsets.
Exactly! If they nailed this, people would actually choose VR over regular TV. It could be a huge selling point.
It’s ridiculous that there are almost no good options for watching sports in VR. Just put a VR camera courtside, and even I, who doesn’t care about sports, would pay for that experience.
Meta’s had a partnership with the NBA for years. You can watch some games live courtside for free in 180-degree VR.
I’m from the UK, so the NBA isn’t really my thing, but thanks for the link! Might try it for fun.
Totally understand. Just wanted to point out that there are already some live sports options in VR. You might also like this: https://xtadiumvr.com
It’s not just sports. My wife loves parades, and I was shocked there weren’t any 8k 360-degree videos of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on YouTube. Such a missed opportunity.
I’ve watched NBA games in VR a lot. The NFL experience on Vision Pro looks exciting too.
It sucks that you can’t get some of these apps in Canada. Feels like we’re always left behind.
VR has so much potential to change how fans watch sports, but it’s frustrating how slow things are progressing. We get niche apps for specific events, but there’s no widespread adoption yet.
The technology is improving, but sports leagues aren’t jumping on board yet. They probably won’t until VR headsets are more mainstream.
