Last year I bought a PSVR 2 unaware of the world of VR gaming. It was December and just released, so there were few games like ‘Horizon Call of The Mountain’ or other PSVR games for PS4 brought back to PS5. However, when in August 2024 they released the ‘PSVR 2 PC adapter,’ I bought it and discovered the world of STEAM VR. Recently, however, when playing VR, my controllers start to drift and lag in commands. So, I decided to buy a new VR headset. But which one should I choose? I wanted to ask you (especially some owners of VR headsets) which one to choose since I’m not very expert in terms of compatibility. The only thing I would like to ask is your advice: VR headsets that are compatible with STEAM VR and also compatible with non-Steam™ games. I hope you can help me since I want a VR headset as soon as possible. I was thinking of buying the Meta Quest 3 or 3S.
Quest 3 or 3S are both fine. They can connect to PC for any PCVR game, Steam or non-Steam, and they can also play their own standalone Quest store games without a PC. If you can afford the Q3, it’s much better. However, first you should troubleshoot your PSVR2 and fix your problem. Sounds like your Bluetooth isn’t working well for the controllers. Go to the PSVR2 subreddit and look for recommended Bluetooth adaptors, and you’ll probably need to get an extension cord so that the adaptor isn’t too close to your PC.

If wireless, go for Quest 3 or Pico 4 (normal/pro/ultra). If cabled, go for Pimax or Bigscreen Beyond. Avoid anything that still uses Fresnel lenses like PSVR2 or HTC Focus Vision or Quest 3S. Remember, you can always buy more games or accessories later when you have more spare money, but you can’t upgrade the major hardware inside your VR headset on the road. So lens and resolution are very important when considering devices. Don’t just trust my words. If possible, go to a store and try on the demos. Quest 2/3S/PSVR2 is similar (PSVR2 a bit better than Quest 2/3S), and all of them can’t even see Quest 3’s tail light in racing. The pancake lens is just too powerful compared to Fresnel lenses. The difference is very clear: you can roll your eyes and look around with pancake lenses/other more advanced lenses, vs. having to keep your eyes straight and turn your head completely to look around with Fresnel lenses.
